What is Play Therapy?
Play Therapy is a creative for children typically 4 – 13 years. It supports children to understand muddled feelings and upsetting events they haven’t had the chance to sort out properly. Children use play to communicate at their level and without feeling interrogated or threatened.
The therapeutic relationship offers a safe and containing way to support the processing of painful and traumatic pre- verbal memories. It offers a space for these to be explored through play and the creative arts.
I work in a non -directive way, using an integrative, holistic model and the child is at the centre of the process. I may introduce more directive activities if/when appropriate to support the therapy.
The resources used may be sand, clay, art materials, messy play, puppets, toys and games, small world figures, music or movement. There is no need to talk if the child does not want to. Sessions are typically 30-40 mins in length depending on individual need.
The referral process:
- Before sessions can begin I meet with the parent/carer to discuss the reasons for seeking play therapy at this time. We completed detailed paper work together to create a holistic picture of the child. This also allows a great opportunity to ask any questions and see if we feel that we can work together. I will also explain my policies in safeguarding, data protection, cancellations and how you can support the therapy process.
- We can make a plan that works for you and your child around days and times (dependant on current availability). I suggest at least 12 sessions initially as it can take time to see and feel progress and time for a trusting relationship to develop.
- We arrange an introductory session for your child to come and meet me and see the space that we will be working in together. Explain to them a little bit about what I can offer them. There is no obligation to continue.
- We all decide together if we are happy to proceed and agree on the initial number of sessions and the date and time they will be held.
- The therapy starts. A parent/carer review takes place around session 6-8. Reviews continue as needed depending on the length of the therapy. It is important for parent/carers to be involved as we work together and the child’s voice is also central to the process.
